Rose Lab

Rose Lab

My grandfather started a rose business in Holland in the 1950s. My father is a rosarian. I grew up on the family farm in Hekpoort, South Africa, and the roses we grew were traded through Amsterdam.

I didn't become a grower. I became a sculptor. The roses came with me anyway.

Rose Lab is where I make my own. I started the collection in 2021. Each rose gets a colour, a name and a number, and each colour comes from somewhere specific: the garden, a material, a memory.

The newest is Sea Glass Rose. Its petals start pale at the edge and deepen to jade turquoise at the heart, the colour of the jade vine on my trellis. No breeder can make that colour.

There are 52 roses in the collection so far. I'll release them here one at a time.
