I made Encased in 2016 for the Brisbane Institute of Art Light Show. The work referenced the case moth cocoon, where the larva gathers twigs and debris of different sizes and binds them into a protective shell.
The structure was built from PVC tubes of varying lengths and diameters, painted matte black. The tubes were clustered and suspended from the ceiling, hanging approximately 1.2 metres tall. Inside the cluster, I installed faceted mirrors and a colour-changing light source. The light projected through the tubes and reflected off the mirrors, casting refracted patterns on the floor below. The floor projection shifted in colour and intensity as the internal light cycled.
The containment was the point. The case moth builds its cocoon from what's available, creating shelter from fragments. The tubes formed the shell. The light stayed inside but leaked through gaps, broken into patterns by the mirrors. The work operated through that tension between enclosure and escape.
Encased was exhibited at the BIA Light Show in 2016. The installation required ceiling suspension and a darkened space to read the floor projections clearly.
